Is anger a defense mechanism to pain....?

When someone acts furiously angry, is it because he defends himself/herself from possible pain of rejection, humiliation, loneliness,abandonment, etc...? That by anger, someone creates the illusion of himself/herself as a powerful, furious and strong individual..?
